Pegasus for kids: the winged horse of Greek myth

What's better than a horse? A horse with wings! Pegasus is the magnificent flying horse of Greek mythology — snow-white, faster than the wind, and one of the most loved creatures in any legend, anywhere.
A magical beginning
Pegasus has one of the strangest origin stories in mythology: he sprang into the world from the tale of Medusa, the snake-haired Gorgon. From one of Greece's scariest stories came its most beautiful creature — that's mythology for you!
Pegasus and the hero Bellerophon
The young hero Bellerophon tamed Pegasus with the help of a golden bridle from the goddess Athena. Riding high above the clouds, the two of them faced the fire-breathing Chimera — a monster no hero could beat on foot. From the sky, Bellerophon and Pegasus won the day.
A horse among the stars
At the end of his adventures, Pegasus flew all the way to the heavens. The Greeks said Zeus placed him among the stars — and you can still find the constellation Pegasus in the autumn night sky today. Look for the "Great Square" of four bright stars: that's his body!

Legends say that wherever Pegasus struck the ground with his hoof, a fresh spring of water bubbled up — including the famous spring of the Muses, the goddesses of art and music.
